All soils consist of sand, silt and clay. What matters is the percentage of each and the type of clay in the soil. Each soil component has different conductivity (or resistance). The EC instrument introduces electrical current into the soil and resistance to the current is continuously communicated back to the device as it travels across the field. Variations indicate changes in soil properties related to soil water holding capacity.
These maps are of the same field. The map on the left shows the variation in soil properties as defined by EC measurement/collection. The map on the right shows soil variation as defined by NRCS. Clearly, the EC map provides more detail. Both sets of data are viewed within Apex software and can be used to help define management zones for various operations within the field.
